The practical implication: a genuinely helpful, original, well-sourced page written entirely by AI is not supposed to be penalized. A thin, repetitive, keyword-stuffed page written by a human is supposed to rank poorly. The rule is about quality, not authorship.

The March 2024 core update and Helpful Content System changes hit AI content aggressively. Sites that lost significant rankings shared common characteristics that explain what Google is actually detecting:
Mass-produced content at scale
Sites that went from 50 to 5,000 pages in a few months, clearly generated programmatically, were hit hardest. The issue was not AI authorship; it was the pattern of mass production without added value.
High topical overlap and thin differentiation

Author authority disconnect
Medical, legal, and financial content with no credible author attribution, especially on sites with clear AI generation patterns, faced E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) penalties.
Poor engagement signals at the page level
AI-generated pages that users bounced from quickly sent negative engagement signals. High bounce rates and low time-on-page are not caused by AI authorship; they are caused by content that does not satisfy search intent.
Can Google detect AI content?
Google has not publicly confirmed using AI detection as a direct ranking signal. What it has confirmed is using quality signals that correlate strongly with AI-generated content patterns: thin content, lack of original information, topical superficiality, and poor engagement metrics.
From a technical standpoint, Google has the capability.
